The Scottish referendum for independence, 2021 was held on June 16, 2021. The referendum question was "Should Scotland be an independent nation?" and was answered with "Yes" or "No". The "Yes" side won, with 21,342,855 votes (51.5%) against the "No" side with 20,138,681 votes (48.5%). The turnout rate was 87.6%, higher than the 2014 Scottish referendum for independence.
The main reason for independence for many Scottish was the leaving of Britain to the EU, as Scotland overwhelmingly voted "Stay" in the 2016 Brexit vote.

The British Parliament granted the independence of Scotland on March 5, 2022, after nearly a full year of bureaucracy and paperwork. Scotland agreed to become a member of the Commonwealth. On March 18, 2022, the United Nations formally recognized Scotland as a nation.
On August 1, 2022, an emergency Scottish parliamentary election was held to determine the next Parliament. The winner was the Scottish National Party, with Nicola Sturgeon as its leader.
