The Populist Era is a periodization of recent American History used by historians and political observers to emphasize the power wielded by populist movements/leaders. It overlaps with what political scientists call the Seventh party system. Definitions of the Populist Era usually include the 2010's to the 2040's, though more inclusive definitions also the late 2000's, and the even the 2050's.
This era is sometimes called the "Trump/Sanders Era" since they are the most iconic figureheads of right-wing and left-wing populist movements respectively.
This era saw the end of Neoliberalism as the dominant political ideology in America as the right-wing embraced economic nationalism while the left wing embraced democratic socialism. The roots of the Populist Era are usually traced back to the Great Recession.
This era also eventually saw the downfall of the Republican Party and the emergence of a multi-party system in the United States.

Historians disagree on when exactly the populist era began, with suggested dates ranging from 2009 (when the Tea Party was formed) to 2016 (when Trump and Sanders ran on anti-establishment platforms in the Republican and Democratic parties respectively).
