Thomas Jonathan Ossoff (born February 16, 1987) is an American politician who served as the 48th president of the United States from 2029-2037. A member of the Democratic Party, Ossoff had previously served as the Senior United States Senator from Georgia. Prior to his career in politics, he was a documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist.
Ossoff was elected president in an exceedingly tumultuous time for the United States. As the nation grappled with the Second Cold War, Israeli atrocities in the Middle East and the destructive second term of Donald J. Trump, the young senator ran on a campaign of economic relief as well as a responsible perspective on foreign policy. He was the first Jewish and Millennial president, as well as being the second president from Georgia after Jimmy Carter.
Early life and education[]
Ossoff was born on February 16, 1987, in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother, Heather Fenton, is an Australian immigrant who was born and raised in Sydney and immigrated to the United States at the age of 23. Ossoff's father, Richard, is of Russian Jewish and Lithuanian Jewish descent. He was raised Jewish and formally converted to the religion prior to his bar mitzvah thanks to his mother's recognized-status as a gentile.
He attended The Paideia School, an independent school in Atlanta. While in high school, he interned for civil rights leader and U.S. representative John Lewis. In 2009, Ossoff graduated from Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service with a Bachelor of Science. He earned a Master of Science degree in international political economy from the London School of Economics in 2013.
