The impeachment of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva consisted of a process initiated with a view to impeding the continuity of Lula's term as President of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The process began with the acceptance, on July 22, 2024, by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, of a complaint for a crime of responsibility offered on June 10, 2024 by the representatives Carla Zambelli (from PL) and André Fufuca (from PP), and ended on May 17, 2025, resulting in the removal of Lula's term. Thus, Lula da Silva became the 5th person holding the position of President of Brazil to be impeached, after Fernando Collor, Café Filho, Carlos Luz and Dilma Rousseff. Among the items addressed in the impeachment request included disrespect for the budget law and the law of administrative impropriety by the president, in addition to suspicion of overbilling and delay in the construction of field hospitals.
Upon acceptance of the request, a special commission was formed in the Chamber of Deputies to decide on its admissibility. The script began with the testimonies of the authors of the request and continued with the presentation of Lula's defense. Meanwhile, street demonstrations for and against the ban periodically took place across the country.
The commission's report was in favor of impeachment of President Lula: 53 representatives approved the report and 12 were against it. On December 19, 2024, the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved the report with 326 votes in favor and 187 against. The Chamber's opinion was immediately sent to the Senate, which also formed its special admissibility committee, whose report was approved by 17 votes in favor and 3 against. On February 8, 2025, the Senate approved the opening of the process by 55 votes to 22, removing Lula from the presidency until the process was concluded. At this time, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin assumed the position of president on an interim basis. On May 17, 2025, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was removed from the position of President after three months of the process initiated in the Senate, which culminated in a vote in plenary resulting in 51 votes in favor and 30 against the impeachment. Then, the Senate approved, by 43 votes to 38, Lula's disqualification from holding public office for 8 years, as provided for in the constitution.
