The Battle of the Bukhan, also known as the Bukhan Offensive, was a small but brutal battle of the Red War fought by the guerrillas of the South Korean 제 2 차 민병대 (roughly transliterated as “Second Group”), American Hearts of Oak, French Troisiéme Division (Third Division), and Japanese ナイチンゲール (“Nightingales”) against North Korean DAEDA and People’s Liberation Front militants garrisoned around the Bukhan River. It took place between 2 September and 12 October 2023 on the southern sides of the river’s lower reaches. It was part of a series of successful offensives in response to the DMZ invasion two months prior, after a pause for redeployment and supply.
