The 2040 United States Presidential Election was the 64th quadrennial presidential election, occurring November 6, 2040. President Jon Ossoff ran for a second term in the presidency with running mate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, incumbent Vice President and lost to the Republican ticket. The Republican party was seeing a comeback despite their unfavorable performance in the 2036 election, and chose former Senators Ted Cruz for President and Marco Rubio for Vice President. Ben Sasse, former Vice President also ran in the Conservative party, the party he and former President Larry Hogan left office in. He chose U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik as his running mate. This became the third consecutive election where three parties gained electoral votes, the second consecutive election where three parties were present at the presidential debates, and the sixth election in American history where the winner lost the popular vote.
After the election, Cruz was supposed to give his victory speech at the morning of November 7. However, a few minutes after he started speaking, he was shot and assassinated. Rubio, upon Cruz's death, was set to become president January 20, 2041. Rubio nominated Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley for Vice President, and she was inaugurated along with Rubio in January 2041.
