The 2020 United States Senate Elections will be held on November 3rd, 2020. 35 Senate seats are up for re-election, including the seat of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In addition, two special elections occurred- one in Georgia to fill the seat of Johnny Isakson, and one in Arizona to fill the former seat of John McCain.

Republicans were initially favored to retain control of the Senate, despite defending 23 seats to the Democrats 12. However, due to an economic downturn in October and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders presence at the top of the ballot, the Democrats gained a total of 9 seats, snagging a 56-44 majority. Two of these seats would become vacant shortly after the start of the new congress due to Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris entering the Executive Branch.

Just two Democrats running for re-election were from states Trump won in 2016: Doug Jones (Alabama) and Gary Peters (Michigan). Two Republicans running for re-election were from Clinton won states in 2016, Susan Collins (Maine) and Cory Gardner (Colorado).

Ultimately, the Republicans gained a Senate seat in the state of Alabama, while Democrats gained in a variety of other locations, including Maine, North Carolina, Arizona, and even an upset in Texas over entrenched Senator John Cornyn.
